PROJECT AUTOPIA

Composting

Description

Composting is a process that makes use of microbes to decompose organic wastes turning them into soil or fertilizer.
Composters are containers specifically designed to host that process.

Humanure

Humanure is a type of composting specifically designed for the recycling of human wastes. The main implementation is the so-called "Composting Toilet", a device that functions as a normal toilet but, instead of being connected to an external sewer system, features a closed comparment that hosts the composting process and requires periodic replacement.

Potential

The main usefulness of composting is that of closing the cycle of local food production techniques (such as hydroponics or aquaponics) by supplying them with the necessary input resouces, who are obtained directly from their wastes rather than external sources, and thus granting their owner complete food self-sufficiency.

Status

Composting in its basic form has been used for millennia.
Concerns about possible health hazards of human waste reclamation however still remain, and more research might be needed in orded to guarantee a completely safe process.
