PROJECT AUTOPIA
Mesh Networks
Description
Mesh networks are telecommunication systems where each node (user) owns the infrastructure to act simultaneously both as a client and a provider; this means each participant can communicate with other ones directly, without the need to rely on a third party.
Potential
Mesh networks can function as a grassroots alternative to the current corporate-owned and highly controlled Internet.
Compared to the regular Internet, mesh network offer several advantages:
- Users aren't required to rely on an ISP provider in order to access the web; this also means that nobody needs to pay in order to be connected.
- If the network is developed enough, nobody can have the power to prevent an user from accessing the web.
Status
Many functioning mesh networks already exist all around the world, however their use is still very limited compared to the regular ISP-dependent web.
